Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Fast Track: Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Tour
The tour was good, but it was very hot. We did not go into the Forum area (too hot) but the tour of the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum were good. The guide jumped around a bit, talking of different times in the history, which was sometimes confusing and the ear phone/ radio ser up was challenging from time to time.

Gladiator Gate and Arena Floor Special Access Colosseum Tour
This was a very very nice tour, I must say that the tour guide “Maria from Rome” (as she introduced herself) was incredible. My daughter who is 8 years old said that she wants to come back with the condition of having the tour with Maria again hehehe. We all learned a lot about the history of Rome. The Colosseum is awesome! As a recommendation, I would avoid doing this tour in summer time if you have small kids because the temperature is very high. Thanks Maria for the great time!

Colosseum with Arena Access and Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
I’ve done the Colosseum / Ancient Ruins tour three different times over the past 8 years, and this was by far the best tour I’ve gone on! Renata was absolutely incredible. Probably one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had.

Skip-the-Line Colosseum Ticket with Optional Tour Guide Access Upgrade
The colosseum was brilliant but wished the tour was longer in here rather than the other areas. For this reason and because of the heat we left the tour early, absolutely nothing to do with the tour guide as she was brilliant. It was also a little confusing trying to find the group initially to meet before heading for the tour as there were so many other groups. I expect the full experience to be great it was just personally too hot and too long outside on the day we went.

Small-Group Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
On one of the hottest days in Rome, Cristina made the tour exciting, interesting, and fun! She has a wealth of knowledge and provided a lot of historical context of what we were seeing. She also showed several photos to complement her explanations. The tour consisted of Colosseum 1st and 2nd level, arch of Constantine, palatine hill, and Roman forum. Can’t wait to come back!

Private Colosseum and Roman Forum Tour
My family was met at our hotel on time and taken to the colosseum in a lovely air conditioned van. There we met our tour guide Rosie for our private tour. She was great - very knowledgeable and kept us going at a good pace! Definitely a 👍 experience!!!

Gladiator’s Tour: Colosseum with Arena Access Small Group
This tour covers a lot of ground (literally and historically). It’s a great way to experience the colosseum without waiting in as many long lines. My guide, Alice, was so lovely, knowledgeable, funny and accommodating. She offered all of us restaurant recommendations after the tour. Highly recommend!

Skip-The-Line Colosseum Tour
Great tour for a very hot day. An hour was enough and our guide was great, she provided plenty of history of the colosseum with a nice mix of what daily life in Rome would have been like.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
